Helping to Protect Americans’ Health at Home and Abroad

With the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

01 / Background

GMMB has helped the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) communicate its mission; protecting Americans from disease at home and abroad. Through effective messaging, materials development, and comprehensive spokesperson trainings, GMMB helped to enhance the communications capacity of various CDC divisions including the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, the Center for Global Health, and the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases.

02 / Strategy

Developing laser-sharp, easily understandable core messaging for CDC has been at the heart of GMMB’s strategy. We’ve provided CDC with multiple high-level spokesperson trainings for key staff, including the agency director Dr. Thomas Frieden, deputies, division leaders, and CDC country directors.

For CDC’s Center for Global Health, GMMB helped to elevate the profiles of CDC deputies and six country directors by providing message and spokesperson trainings tailored to each leader’s specialized field and region. GMMB worked with the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases to train the director and staff using key messages and stories related to foodborne illness and food safety. GMMB has drafted remarks and advised on messaging for the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention.

03 / Work

GMMB provided strategic counsel and planning for CDC, and guided development of messaging, talking points, and remarks. We provided spokesperson trainings and one-on-one prep sessions, developed thorough media briefings for key speaking events, and developed effective earned media strategies by coordinating reporter roundtables and interviews with targeted media outlets, including NPR and POLITICO.

GMMB distilled complex information about CDC’s efforts to combat AIDS into a clear and digestible format: infographics. GMMB also enhanced CDC’s outreach materials, including audience-to-message guides, PowerPoint presentations, and fact sheets.

04 / Results

Through messaging, trainings, and materials development, GMMB has helped CDC effectively communicate their efforts to save American lives with training and research, and by monitoring and containing outbreaks abroad before they reach the U.S.
